As many continue recovering from the active 2017 Hurricane season, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on June 5 released a number of recommendations of how to prepare for the current season, which began June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

FEMA suggests assembling an emergency kit, pre-planning evacuation routes and locations, upgrading insurance, and even practicing emergency response with family. Other recommendations included visiting several online locations, including downloading the FEMA app, signing up for alerts, preparing financially for a disaster, and improving overall disaster preparedness by visiting www.ready.gov.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen visited Miami’s National Hurricane Center for an operational briefing May 30.

“Disasters often require a response beyond what any one locality or agency can handle,” she said. “Each of us make up only one part of the overall team. It requires all levels of government, non-profit organizations, private sector businesses, and individual communities to work together to prepare for disasters—and be ready to respond when disaster strikes.”
