NYC Releases Hundreds of Criminal Alien Suspects

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has determined that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and New York Department of Corrections (NYDOC) ignored hundreds of ICE detainers early in 2018, releasing suspected criminal aliens from custody without notifying ICE.

“Within the three months, from January to mid-April this year, ICE prepared more than 440 detainers against aliens booked by NYPD or NYDOC,” according to an ICE news release. “Nearly 40 individuals who were released from custody, reoffended and were again arrested for crimes by local law enforcement officers.”

Among those caught and released were an Azerbaijani man released in February, who had previously been arrested for criminal trespass and credit card theft. He also had assault and disorderly conduct convictions in his criminal history. A Guatemalan man arrested for assault of an elderly individual was released in January and then re-arrested in February for grand larceny, and then again nabbed in March for resisting arrest.

ICE also reported that New York City officials have not notified ICE about the release of aliens from custody since 2014, “except for those that fall within the 170 crimes considered egregious by the [NYC] mayor’s Office,” the report stated.

“Sanctuary policies, which have pushed ICE out of jails, force our officers to conduct more enforcement in the community – which poses increased risks for law enforcement and the public,” the report stated. “It also increases the likelihood that ICE will encounter other illegal aliens who previously were not on our radar.”
