President Donald Trump sent a letter to the speaker of the House of Representatives and the president pro tempore of the Senate April 15 outlining his actions taken April 13 to strike suspected chemical weapons locations in Syria.
“The targets of the combined operation were a scientific research center installation, a storage facility, and a bunker,” the letter read. “I directed this action In response to the Syrian government’s continued and unlawful use of chemical weapons, including the horrific attack in Duma, Syria on April 7 that injured or killed numerous innocent civilians.”
The president said the attack’s purpose was to “degrade the Syrian military’s ability to conduct further chemical weapons attacks and to dissuade the Syrian government from using or proliferating chemical weapons.”
Trump noted that it was his constitution authority as commander in chief of the military and chief executive to work to defer chemical weapon use and prevent a worsening of Syria’s humanitarian disaster.
“The United States will take additional action, as necessary and appropriate, to further its important national interests,” Trump added.
