
WASHINGTON — The Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration have finalized binding technical standards mandating passive radio-frequency and radar counter-drone surveillance grids at all Category X and Class-I commercial hub airports.
WASHINGTON — Responding to an alarming surge in near-miss encounters between commercial passenger jetliners and rogue unmanned aerial vehicles, federal aviation regulators and homeland security leadership published a joint security directive requiring the nation’s 30 largest commercial airports to field certified counter-UAS surveillance envelopes extending five nautical miles from runway thresholds.
Under the new mandates, airport authorities must achieve full operational capability for continuous low-altitude airspace monitoring before December 2026. The directive marks the culmination of a multi-year effort to close critical low-altitude radar gaps around airport approach and departure funnels.
Passive RF Telemetry and Optical Multi-Sensor Grids
To prevent catastrophic interference with commercial aircraft avionics, instrument landing systems, or air traffic control voice channels, airport operators are prohibited from deploying active radio frequency jamming or directed energy weapons without direct federal coordination. Instead, the mandated technical architecture relies on passive sensor grids:
- Continuous 3D Volumetric Tracking: Fusing passive RF receivers, micro-Doppler radar, and high-speed infrared tracking cameras to detect non-broadcasting autonomous drones.
- Automated Pilot Geolocation: Triangulating the handheld remote controller position to dispatch local law enforcement units to the operator’s physical location within two minutes.
- Integrated Air Traffic Feeds: Direct data pipelines linking airport security operations centers with FAA control towers for immediate runway suspension decisions.
Closing the Legal and Operational Seam
The directive addresses a long-standing vulnerability: while the FAA controls commercial airspace and local police secure airport grounds, the low-altitude zone between ground perimeters and terminal approach corridors often lacked unified operational jurisdiction.
“We cannot tolerate an operating environment where a careless hobbyist or a malicious actor can shut down runway operations at JFK or O’Hare with a $500 plastic drone,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in announcing the directive. “Mandating certified detection grids provides the actionable intelligence airport police and federal law enforcement need to intercept rogue pilots before an airborne catastrophe can occur.”
