
ARLINGTON, Va. — The Transportation Security Administration has deployed more than 1,500 Credential Authentication Technology units across 125 domestic airports, marking a major transformation in how airport checkpoints verify passenger identities and flight credentials.
ARLINGTON, Va. — In a major technological upgrade to commercial aviation checkpoints, the Transportation Security Administration has accelerated the nationwide fielding of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) podiums. The automated document scanners verify the authenticity of driver’s licenses, passports, and permanent resident cards while cross-referencing traveler manifests in real time.
Under legacy screening procedures, Transportation Security Officers visually inspected government-issued IDs using magnifying loupes and ultraviolet flashlights, while passengers presented physical paper boarding passes or mobile barcode displays. With the CAT system, passengers simply insert their photo identification directly into the reader slot.
Direct Connectivity to Secure Secure Flight Databases
The CAT device communicates directly with TSA’s central Secure Flight passenger pre-screening database via an encrypted federal network connection. Within two seconds, the system confirms whether the traveler has a confirmed reservation departing that airport within the operational window, validates their security vetting status (such as TSA PreCheck eligibility), and detects fraudulent security features embedded within the credential.
“Credential Authentication Technology eliminates one of the most significant security vulnerabilities at the checkpoint: fraudulent or altered identification,” said Darby LaJoye, TSA Executive Assistant Administrator for Security Operations. “It also removes the operational requirement for passengers to present a boarding pass at travel document check lanes, streamlining checkpoint throughput during peak travel periods.”
Paving the Way for Digital Mobile Driver’s Licenses
TSA engineers are actively testing next-generation CAT-2 podiums equipped with near-field communication (NFC) readers and optional biometric camera attachments. These upgrades will enable checkpoints to accept digital Mobile Driver’s Licenses (mDLs) stored in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, complying with NIST Special Publication 800-63-3 digital identity guidelines.
Agency leadership affirmed that biometric matching remains strictly voluntary for domestic travelers. However, aviation industry analysts project that the combination of machine-readable physical credentials and digital identity standards will dramatically reduce checkpoint wait times while erecting formidable barriers against impersonation and document forgery.
