As millions of commercial and hobbyist uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) take to domestic airspace, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and local airport operators face an escalating challenge: neutralizing rogue drones operating near flight paths without disrupting civil aviation radars or air traffic control communications.
Drone sightings within five miles of major international airport runways have increased exponentially over the past three years. While the vast majority represent reckless hobbyist behavior, intelligence agencies warn of the growing threat of weaponized commercial drones configured with explosive payloads or chemical dispersal systems targeting open tarmac areas.
The Challenge of Non-Kinetic Interception
In military environments, counter-drone units utilize surface-to-air missiles or 30mm airburst cannons to shred incoming UAS. In densely populated metropolitan air hubs, kinetic solutions are completely unviable due to falling shrapnel and stray munitions.
Instead, airport testing centers on smart radio-frequency (RF) protocol manipulation and cyber takeover systems. These platforms detect the specific control link between the drone and its remote pilot, decipher the telemetry handshake, and issue an overriding ‘Return-to-Home’ or ‘Safe Land’ command without jamming neighboring GPS frequencies used by commercial jetliners.
Expanding Legal Authorities
A major obstacle has been statutory: under existing federal telecommunications and wiretap laws, private airport operators and municipal police departments are legally prohibited from intercepting RF signals or seizing control of aircraft in flight. Congressional leaders are advancing legislation to grant certified state and local law enforcement narrow C-UAS mitigation authorities during national special security events (NSSEs).
