Space Development Agency Tranche 1 Tracking Satellites Achieve Initial Operational Capability

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Space Development Agency has achieved Initial Operational Capability for its Tranche 1 Tracking Layer in proliferated low-Earth orbit, demonstrating real-time infrared tracking of maneuvering hypersonic weapons and passing targeting tracks directly to terrestrial interceptor batteries.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — At Schriever Space Force Base, military space operators and aerospace engineers confirmed that the first operational cluster of the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Tranche 1 Tracking Layer has begun relaying live tactical targeting telemetry to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

The operational milestone marks a profound structural transformation in American missile warning architecture. For half a century, the Pentagon relied primarily on a handful of massive, exquisite satellites positioned in geosynchronous orbit (GEO) 22,000 miles above the equator. While GEO satellites provide constant coverage, their immense distance makes it difficult to track dim, maneuvering hypersonic boost-glide vehicles flying in the upper atmosphere, and their small numbers make them high-value targets for Russian and Chinese anti-satellite missiles.

Proliferated Low-Earth Orbit and Optical Intersatellite Links

The SDA’s architecture relies on proliferation: launching hundreds of small, mass-produced satellites into low-Earth orbit (LEO) roughly 600 miles above Earth. The Tranche 1 Tracking constellation features wide-field-of-view overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) sensors capable of detecting the thermal heat bloom of hypersonic glide bodies traversing the mesosphere at Mach 7.

Crucially, the satellites are linked together by optical intersatellite links (OISLs)—space-based laser communications terminals that transmit gigabits of encrypted tracking data across the orbital mesh at the speed of light. If an adversary destroys one or two satellites, the mesh network autonomously re-routes data around the loss in milliseconds, rendering anti-satellite strikes tactically futile.

Direct Sensor-to-Shooter Cueing for Ground Batteries

During live tracking trials conducted across the Pacific, Tranche 1 satellites acquired a simulated hypersonic target immediately upon booster burnout, maintained a continuous custody track through evasive maneuvers, and downlinked fire-control-quality targeting solutions directly to an Army Patriot PAC-3 MSE battery and a Navy Aegis destroyer via tactical Link 16 datalinks.

“We have eliminated the multi-minute delay that once plagued strategic missile warning,” said SDA Director Derek Tournear. “By putting eyes directly in low-Earth orbit and connecting them with optical laser crosslinks, we provide our frontline air defense commanders with the exact coordinates they need to engage maneuvering threats before they enter their terminal descent.”
