
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Following the dramatic shootdown of a Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has recalibrated its radar aperture filters, exposing a wider array of low-speed aerial objects.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — At Peterson Space Force Base, NORAD commanders have fundamentally altered how the military’s primary early-warning radar networks process raw radar returns across North American sovereign airspace.
For decades, North American air defense radars were optimized to detect high-speed, high-altitude threats—principally intercontinental ballistic missiles, strategic long-range bombers, and fast-moving cruise missiles. To prevent military air-picture displays from being overwhelmed by environmental clutter, radar algorithms automatically filtered out objects moving at slow speeds or displaying minuscule radar cross-sections, such as weather balloons, civilian scientific payloads, and atmospheric phenomena.
Opening the Aperture: The Discovery of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena
Following the transit of the 200-foot Chinese surveillance airship across sensitive military missile silos in Montana, Gen. Glen VanHerck, commander of NORAD and USNORTHCOM, ordered technicians to “open the filters.” By adjusting Doppler velocity gates and elevation thresholds, radar operators immediately began picking up smaller, slow-moving objects drifting between 20,000 and 60,000 feet.
The immediate consequence was a flurry of kinetic engagements. Within eight days, Air Force F-22 Raptors utilizing AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles intercepted and destroyed three separate airborne objects over Alaska, the Yukon territory in Canada, and Lake Huron in Michigan.
Strategic Counter-Surveillance and Airspace Management
Declassified intelligence assessments indicate that Beijing has operated a global military balloon surveillance fleet directed by the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force, conducting reconnaissance flights over five continents to collect signals intelligence and map atmospheric transmission corridors.
The incursions have triggered an urgent interagency review between the Pentagon, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security. Officials are developing new civil-military coordination protocols to ensure high-altitude commercial flights are protected while closing long-standing detection gaps across America’s northern air approaches.
“We are living in a new threat environment where adversaries test our warning thresholds with asymmetric, non-traditional platforms,” Gen. VanHerck told lawmakers during closed-door testimony. “Opening our radars was the necessary first step; now we must field integrated, multi-domain sensor architectures that leave no blind spots in the skies above our homeland.”
